Abacus project aims to pay it forward to help communityCOUNTRY Comforts Café is the first Sunshine Coast Hinterland business to join the newly created Abacus Project, aiming to pay it forward for homeless people who are struggling.Owner, Angie Malin, first heard about the project on a local radio station on her way to work, and within 24 hours contacted the founder, Edith Cragg, to join the Sunshine Coast found initiative.The project’s aim is for people who can afford it, to cover the cost of a coffee, tea, juice, cake, pie or sausage roll, for someone else who is doing it tough.Those who pay it forward then move the corresponding abacus over, to show the number of credits available for each item.People who can claim something from the Abacus Project can be someone who is homeless, in between jobs, couch surfing, or even old aged pensioners.“The project is not just about homeless people… it can be for anyone who is doing it tough, someone who may just need that little bit of help along,” she said.“That’s what it’s all about, just helping out our community.”For those who do want to claim something from the cafe, they will have a codeword, which the cafe will spread to community centres and information centres, for people doing it tough to use.“We will create a phrase which we will circulate around the community for people to use to claim something from the Abacus Project,” she said. “It saves their dignity to stop them from having to beg for something.”According to the Sunshine Coast Council’s website, there are over 122,000 Australians who are homeless, including 1205 people on the Sunshine Coast.Main causes for homelessness includes, “a lack of social and affordable housing, low rental vacancy rate, unaffordable rents, domestic and family violence, financial stress, physical health, mental health and addiction.”After a week of having the abacus at the cafe, she has already had people join the cause.“We have already had about 20 people pay it forward and we have had one person claim something for a lady that I knew who was struggling,” she said.“I told her that someone has paid for her to have a coffee today and she was delighted, she was so happy.”Angie highlighted the significance of similar initiatives on the Sunshine Coast, especially in light of the cost of living and rental crisis.“It’s so important to have projects like this, we need to help out our own, its just sad to see people struggling,” she said.“It’s like putting the boot on the other foot, if you are the one doing it tough and to feel that caring side of human nature, because you don’t see a lot that anymore.“I think there’s quite a few people in this area who need it, it’s just something small we can do to help someone out, and it shows someone cares.”The Country Comforts Cafe owner also praised what great work the founder, Edith, has done in the short amount of time that the Abacus Project has Browse Presentation Creator Pro Upload Jan 07, 2025 230 likes | 285 Views Avehi Public Charitable Trust promotes empowerment through education via audio-visual media to enhance rational thinking, social awareness, and social change. MissionAvehi Public Charitable Trust was founded in 1981. • The Avehi Abacus project (AAP) wasinitiated in 1990 in Mumbai, to strengtheneducation in primary schools by promotinginteractive discussions through stories andgames. • Asha is affiliated with Avehi since 1999and Asha Seattle from 2000 HistoryPaid employees • Trustees - 4 • Core Team - 4 • Chief Project Coordinator - 1 • Accounts and Administration Head - 1 • Account Assistant - 1 • Production Coordinator - 1 • Sangati Field Coordinators - 7 • Manthan Coordinator - 1 • Field Representatives - 40 • Volunteers: All Trustees except Simantini are in honorary position. They currently have 3 volunteers. The core team do draw salaries but they are not paid on par with others occupying similar positions in voluntary field in Mumbai/India. Also when there is financial crunch they forgo their remuneration (and are not usually given salary raise) and they can thus be considered as part honorary, part paid. Team DetailsHead Office : Mumbai, Maharashtra. • Projects : All over Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan. • Avehi has active participation in all municipal schools in Mumbai and non government schools in rest of the states. • Mumbai Municipal Corporation has 1252 total schools (BMC website, 2014-2015 data). Out of these 945 are Upper-Primary schools. Avehi Abacus Project - Sangati, works with all 945 schools (in 8 languages). Location and OutreachSangati (children) The Sangati series is intended to serve as a foundation course to enrich and supplement the school curriculum. It consists of six interactive learning kits for teachers and children in formal schools and Non-formal Education (NFE) centres. In formal schools, teachers can use it as a foundation course for Classes V – VII. The Abacus ProjectInstilling a Love of Math at an Early AgeThe Abacus Project was established after several early-childhood based organizations in Siskiyou County, in partnership with the Ford Family Foundation, came together to implement a program that would not only give young children the skills they need to prepare them for kindergarten, but would empower parents and caregivers to help them achieve those skills. The Ford Family Foundation, located in Roseburg, Oregon, makes grants to public charities benefiting communities in rural Oregon and Siskiyou County, California. The goal of the Children, Youth and Families department “focuses on the youngest members of our rural population, prenatal to age 18. We work with partners, grantees, families and rural communities to support kindergarten-readiness efforts — prenatal until a child enters school, ready to learn,” as stated on the Ford Family Foundation website. According to Christy Cox, Early Childhood Development Senior Program Officer for the Ford Family Foundation, “The Abacus Project was a successful, community-designed and -led project that put age-appropriate math information and materials into the hands of parents and children.” She also emphasized that, “Research about early childhood development shows that math knowledge and skills at kindergarten entry are strong predictors of later school success.” The project went through the planning phases in 2014, was launched in 2015 and concluded in the spring of 2017. Families have long been encouraged to expose their children to books to foster reading and literacy skills, but a question that the planning group asked themselves when collaborating on this project was, “What if we put math materials in the home?” Free kits to inspire a love of math were designed and put together by College of the Siskiyous in collaboration with local groups such as First 5 Siskiyou, Siskiyou Childcare Council, Early Head Start and Karuk Head Start. During the course of the project, almost 2,000 Infant and Toddler and Pre-K Abacus kits were distributed to residents of Siskiyou County through county fairs, preschool sites, family resource centers, childcare centers, the college and other venues. Workshops were held at several sites to introduce and educate parents, caregivers and early childhood professionals on how to use the kits with the children. There was also a one-credit course offered at College of the Siskiyous that used the Abacus content and kits to teach about young childhood math development. The kits consisted of toys and manipulatives that would introduce and teach the concepts of measurement, numeracy, patterns, spatial concepts and shapes. The Infant and Toddler kit included items such as measuring cups, board books, blocks and toy ducks, while the Pre-K kit for ages 3-5 had items like dice and rulers. Tangrams, which are dissection puzzles consisting of seven flat shapes, called tans, that are put together to form other shapes; and stackable Unifix cubes were also a part of the age 3-5 kits. Both kits also included age-specific activity cards for parents and caregivers to help them teach concepts to the children. Cox pointed out that although the.
