Gordon Ryan is considered the greatest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner of all time by many. But the seven-time ADCC winner isn’t really as popular and as respected among fight fans as his numerous achievements warrant. Why? Well, the main reason seems to be his openness about using performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). The GOAT practitioner has pointed out that PED usage is endemic in the sport of BJJ, and not taking them would put him at a competitive disadvantage.Of course, this has invited harsh criticism from many, while others, such as Joe Rogan have supported Ryan’s steroid usage. And verbose UFC analyst Chael Sonnen has also weighed into the controversy. “Gordon Ryan did not deny steroid use. In fact, he admitted to PED. I’ve heard him talk about PED use and the fact that anabolics are not prohibited in jiu-jitsu. And his evidence that it’s allowed is not a bylaw or a subsection, it is the fact that everybody uses it,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel.ADVERTISEMENTArticle continues below this ad‘Uncle Chael’ himself is no stranger to PEDs, or openly talking about using it. The former UFC superstar, of course, has admitted that he had “a higher juice concentrate than Tropicana” going into his UFC 159 title fight against Jon Jones. This is perhaps why Sonnen feels that Ryan’s PED usage is justified.“He is very much right in that using PEDs does not give him an advantage, it levels the playing field. That mentality has never worked anywhere but it doesn’t make him wrong. I appreciated it. Joe Rogan appreciated it. He’s on to the right concept. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him admitting that strength matters,” he added. However, there is an increase in the number of voices within the grappling fraternity who are calling for a change in how PEDs are dealt with in the BJJ world.ADVERTISEMENTArticle continues below this adMike Musumeci blasts Gordon Ryan and the BJJ world for holding back the sportIBJJF world champion and UFC Fight Pass BJJ maestro Mikey Musumeci recently took shots at the BJJ world. Gordon Ryan has been absent from competition for quite some time now, but he’s been able to provide a more concrete update on his recovery time after surgery now. He hasn’t competed at all in 2023 and recently revealed the reasons behind it, explaining a series of illnesses that have resulted in him needing extensive antibiotic treatment. Not only have these issues kept him off the mats anyway, but the treatment for them has also resulted in the resurgence of the stomach issues that kept him out of competition in the past. The last time that fans were able to see Ryan competing was just at the end of 2022, when he defeated Nicky Rodriguez in EBI overtime at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 3. He wasn’t originally supposed to take anywhere near this amount of time off though, as he was originally booked to compete in the fourth match against Felipe Pena at the end of February. This would only have been around 3 months between matches but during the final few days leading up to the match, disaster struck. Ryan came down with an illness that forced him to withdraw from the match and he was replaced at the last minute. He’s been dealing with a series of different issues since then and it wasn’t clear when he’d be returning to competition, but Gordon Ryan has been able to provide a more detailed update on the timeline for his recovery after surgery. He isn’t able to start lifting weights for another 3 weeks and can’t return to training for another 2 months, putting his return to the mats in general at around the late June or early August mark. He’ll obviously have to spend some time working to get back into competition-shape and will likely want a proper training camp leadingGordon Ryan – Tagged Gordon Ryan – BJJ Fanatics

Gordon Ryan, the multiple-time ADCC world champion, considered the No Gi GOAT has always been honest about his use of PEDs. Has prevented the discipline from becoming a respectable professional sport. The former ONE Championship fighter also raked Ryan over the coals for his open PED usage. He pointed out that Ryan looked like an old man already, despite being only 29 years old.ADVERTISEMENTArticle continues below this adRyan, for his part, responded by essentially saying that Musumeci was just jealous of him and his achievements, and dismissed ‘Darth Rigatoni’s criticism as mere moral grandstanding. “Mikey cries because he can’t do what I do, and that’s his only way to make himself feel better,” Ryan said. But the fact remains that the reputation of the entire sport of BJJ has been hurt because of these PED allegations. And when the sport’s biggest, most well-known star has such a cavalier attitude towards steroids, which, lest we forget, is equivalent to cheating for most sports fans, there is little hope for change. View Draft Report Though Gordon was Nebraska's top high school prospect in 2002, he went undrafted because he was set on playing for his hometown Cornhuskers. Three years later, he's the best college position player in the draft and has considerably more offensive potential than former Husker Darin Erstad, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1995 draft. Gordon should hit for power and average because he has a sweet lefthanded swing, strength, exceptional strike-zone discipline and the ability to make adjustments. He uses the entire field and can drive the ball where it's pitched after getting pull-conscious as a sophomore. After a slow start with wood bats last summer, he adapted and became Team USA's second-best hitter (behind Virginia's Ryan Zimmerman). Zimmerman's skill at the hot corner forced Gordon to play first base, but he's a solid defender at third. When Gordon first arrived at Nebraska, some thought he might have to move to first base or an outfield corner. But he has worked hard on his defense, where his strong arm, instincts and quickness are assets. A solid-average runner, Gordon is chasing a rare 20-20 season this spring. There's no glaring weakness in his game, and he should advance rapidly as a pro. Gordon probably won't go as high as Erstad and may command a major league contract, but he's not considered a particularly tough sign. Gordon Ryan has weighed in on the recent controversy surrounding Bryce Mitchell's comments about German dictator Adolf H**ler. The UFC featherweight contender stated that he believed H**ler to be a "good guy" who was only trying to protect his country. The comments have stunned MMA fans worldwide, and UFC CEO Dana White condemned the Arkansas native's statement during a recent press conference. But when asked what the promotion planned to do to punish Mitchell, the company's CEO cited his belief in freedom of speech while stating that they would not do anything further.Following Power Slap 11, which took place on Jan. 30 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, White appeared in front of the media at the post-event press conference. He was asked if Mitchell would face any punishment, and said this: Get the latest updates on One Championship Rankings at Sportskeeda and more"That's what everybody wants to hear about, it's free speech. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion Gordon Ryan recently had an interesting interview with Ketone IQ.Gordon Ryan, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) champion, recently gave an intriguing interview with Ketone IQ.His fascination with martial arts began with watching UFC legends like Georges St-Pierre and Matt Hughes, but it was Royce Gracie who truly captured his imagination. “My first introduction was Royce Gracie versus Ken Shamrock… that’s why I fell in love with jiu-jitsu because I realized this is the superior martial art,” Ryan explained.BJJ Is More Than Physical ConditioningRyan credits much of his success to his coach John Danaher’s unconventional training methods, which emphasize mental preparation over physical prowess. “He puts more emphasis on the mental work, which is the hardest kind of work,” Ryan said. While many athletes focus on grueling physical workouts, Danaher challenges his students to engage in deep, methodical analysis.“Everyone’s happy to come in, get a strong workout, and go home feeling sore,” Ryan noted. “But when you ask them to sit down and think about an armbar for an hour, no one wants to do that.” This intellectual approach sets BJJ apart from other martial arts, making it a complex and constantly evolving discipline. Why Intelligent People Love BJJRyan offered an insightful perspective on why high-profile individuals like Mark Zuckerberg and Lex Fridman are drawn to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The sport acts as a unique social equalizer, where status, wealth, and fame are irrelevant. “When you’re on those mats, you’re a regular guy. You’re not an ultra-rich guy or a celebrity—you’re.
